Real ear measurements are a best-practice method used to verify how a hearing aid is actually performing in an individual ear. Because ear canals vary in size and shape, the same hearing aid settings can produce different results from one person to another.
How the test works
A thin probe microphone is placed in the ear canal near the eardrum while the hearing aid is worn. Speech-like test signals are presented through a calibrated speaker. The system measures the sound reaching the eardrum and compares it with evidence-based prescription targets based on the patient’s hearing loss.
Why manufacturer “first fit” is not enough
Programming software estimates how a device should perform, but those estimates cannot fully account for the acoustics of every individual ear. Real ear verification shows the clinician what is actually happening rather than relying only on a computer prediction.
What can be adjusted?
The audiologist can fine-tune gain across frequencies, check soft, average, and louder inputs, and confirm that output remains comfortable. Verification can be especially useful when speech sounds are still unclear, amplification seems too soft, or certain sounds are overly sharp.
Does everyone need the exact same target?
Verification provides an objective starting point, but patient preference and comfort still matter. The goal is a fitting that is both appropriately audible and usable in everyday life.
