Hearing Protection at Work

Meet Nate Dobson

Man using orange custom hearing protection while working on a pickup truck

Nate is a local small-business owner. He owns Dobson Details, an auto-detailing shop in Polk City, IA. He loves his job because he gets to work with a variety of vehicles and he uses creativity to work every day. However, one of the downsides of his job is that it’s very noisy. Loud machinery can wreak havoc on a person’s hearing health. Specifically, equipment like air compressed tools, orbital polishers, rotary buffers, master blasters, shop vacs, tornadors, and pressure washers can create a noisy hearing environment. That’s why Nate reached out to Merit Hearing to actively protect his hearing.

In the past, Nate had tried standard hearing protection measures such as generic foam earplugs, but always found them difficult to use as they can easily fall out. By using silicone to create a custom ear mold, we’ve ensured that Nate won’t have retention issues anymore and can have a reliable, snug fit every time.

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) can affect people of all ages. Based on a 2012 CDC study, up to 40 million people under 70 suffer from hearing loss in one or both ears due to exposure to loud noise. Hearing loss can be caused by occupational noise hazards, recreational activities such as loud concerts, or really any loud sounds that someone may encounter. Recognizing what situations call for hearing protection can equip you with the right tools to prevent hearing loss. Any prolonged exposure to noise over 80 dB should require protection.

Fortunately, NIHL is completely preventable. By understanding and implementing healthy hearing practices, you can protect your hearing. Silicone ear molds, like the ones custom-fitted for Nate, are a great way to protect your hearing. A variety of product options are available for specific industries including aviation, musical/musicians, and hunting. Our audiologists are happy to assist you in determining the best custom hearing protection for your needs.

Thank you, Nate, for sharing your story and entrusting us with your hearing healthcare. If your car could use a little extra care, you can reach out to Nate at:
