Traditional Medicare
A very common question we are asked is, “Does Medicare pay for hearing aids?”
This is a great question, since hearing loss becomes more common as people age. The majority of people who can benefit from hearing aids are over the age of 65, and thus qualify for Medicare insurance coverage. Unfortunately, traditional Medicare does not currently cover hearing aids, hearing aid fittings/adjustments, or hearing tests for the purpose of obtaining hearing aids.
Some Medicare Advantage (also known as Medicare Part C) plans do offer benefits that traditional Medicare does not. Some of these plans may offer coverage for hearing aids, and it may be worth researching if any available plans cover hearing aids and still meet your other healthcare needs. Medicare open enrollment is from October-December each year and is the only chance members have to switch plans.
Supplemental Insurance
Some patients have secondary insurance plans through a previous employer, or supplemental “Medigap” coverage that they have purchased to help cover some of their out-of-pocket costs. These supplemental plans sometimes offer coverage for hearing aids and other hearing-related services. The easiest way to find out if your particular supplement offers these benefits is to call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card.
Merit Hearing is contracted with many insurance plans. In many cases, we can submit claims directly to your insurance. If you have specific questions regarding whether your insurance covers hearing aids, or if we are contracted with your plan, we are happy to help.
